A FILM SERIES

Video Example

THE NEED

How can I highlight other people, their thoughts, and stories that align with my mission statement?

The Approach

With this challenge in mind, I developed a short video series called “Perspective” It focused on highlighting different perspectives that aligned with my artistic mission and helped to progress the culture.

Direction

Initially, the art direction keyed in on dynamic shot angles with a camera on a tripod but expanded to a more handheld and short vignette approach.
Film borders, light leaks, and grain helped to create a film-emulative feel, and in the later episodes, I began to incorporate a much more extensive 16mm film-emulative colour grading style.

Design

I wanted to communicate the concept of opening eyes to new ideas, so I created an almost line-drawing style eye logo mark, that would open between light leaks within the intro. I utilized lightweight typography to tie together the feeling of that line-drawn style. The branding needed to feel more polished than hand-drawn but with a natural humanistic touch.

The Process

Each video begins with a conversation with whomever I’m looking to feature. I have an idea in mind of what they can bring to the series and take the time to hear that out more fully. The scripting process is collaborative, while the visual process sits in my court. As we tighten the script, I plan for visuals and shot lengths to harmonize with those.

This is a solo endeavor, so it is always a personal moment between the subject and me, rather than bringing a team along. The intimacy, rawness, and realness are essential for this series to speak to the audience.

Usage

“Perspective” finds its home on my YouTube Channel. While it is no longer a series that I regularly update, it may become something that is revived periodically around certain subject matter. You can watch all archived episodes here.
